At Apple's latest annual World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) there were surprisingly no new hardware announcements made. What they did reveal was the future of their new operating system, coined as macOS Sierra.
For the last decade and a half, Apple has referred to their operating system as Mac OS X (The X is pronounced 10, not the letter X). Starting with this new version and releasing to the general public this fall, the name is now macOS.
The good news: Apple has crammed a lot of really cool new features into macOS Sierra 10.12.
All these changes come with a price, and that price is compatibility. If you are running an older Mac, there is a chance you will not be able to upgrade to the new OS this fall. Supported Mac computers include:
If your Mac is not on that list, you won’t be able to run macOS Sierra 10.12. While a 2009 MacBook Pro is a great computer, Mac OS X 10.11 (Mavericks) is the latest OS you will be able to run on that machine.
Unclear on what year your Mac was released by Apple? By clicking on About This Mac, you can find your OS version and year your Mac was released. If it’s on the list above, you’re all set. If it’s older, it will not run macOS Sierra.
